A Chinese gilt bronze cast scholar on a deer censer, dating from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). The bearded scholar, on a separate piece of bronze, is riding side saddle, holds a Ruyi scepter in his right hand and a small scroll in his left. His face is very expressive with detail, as is his robe. The walking deer has six point horns, which is cast separately and inserted into a slot in the deer's head.
