Von Sung Yang (1903-2005), acquired between 1939 and 1955. Doyle Auctions, New York, 14th September 2009, lot 185.The other: Scottish Private Collection.其一: 楊和慶醫生(1900-1964)及楊宋鳳蓀(1903-2005)伉儷收藏,得於1939至1955年之間 Doyle 拍賣行,紐約,2009年9月14日,編號185 其二: 蘇格蘭私人收藏This sophisticated, imposing pair of vessels is finely painted with an extravagant array of lush blossoms emerging from a gnarled tree trunk bowed beneath the colorful array. The restrained and refined quality of the composition, the controlled palette with its use of overglaze blue, as well as the compressed bombé form of the bowl with its lion-head ring handles mark the pair as products of the late Kangxi period. Earlier Kangxi period fish bowls usually feature an underglaze-blue or blue and red palette and are of a more upright form with a rolled rim. For an example of this type, see one sold in these rooms, 20th March 2013, lot 162. Massive famille-verte fish bowls are exceptionally rare, perhaps because of the technical challenges of successfully producing a vessel of such substantial size in the more complicated palette that required multiple firings. See an identical fish bowl, from the collection of A.H.Y.M. Herbert, sold at Christie's London, 19th March 1979, lot 36. A related famille-verte fish bowl of upright cylindrical form, painted with dragons, was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 28th May 2019, lot 3135. Two other famille-verte examples, both decorated with lotus flowers, and closer to the present forms but with rolled rather than everted rims, are in museums, one from the Widener Collection is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. (accession no. 1942.9.644) and the other is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia (accession no.1944.20.373a,b). A third example with lotus decoration, in the Jie Rui Tang Collection, is illustrated in Jeffrey P. Stamen, Cynthia Volk with Yibin Ni, A Culture Revealed, Kangxi-Era Chinese Porcelain from the Jie Rui Tang Collection, Bruges, 2017, cat. no. 72. Placed in elegant courtyards or garden pavilions of distinguished homes, these sturdily potted, capacious forms were designed to contain water and fish, a function delightfully augmented by interiors painted with fish among water plants.Kangxi Famille Verte, Marchant, London, 2017, cat. no. 38.《康熙五彩》,馬錢特,倫敦,2017年,編號38
