This pair of vase-turned-lamps have a rounded mouth, a thick neck, sloping shoulders, a bulging belly transitioning to a circular base, and gilt S-shaped, auspicious handles symmetrically placed on both sides of the neck. The pair of vases are symmetrical with double-sided scenes, and each side highlights the artist's solid skills Below the handles are intertwined patterns of rope-like segments, a gilt won, a pair of fish, and a chime, symbolizing good fortune and longevity. One side of the lamps are brought to live with depictions of lush, green mountains and flowing water. Mountains and nearby stones emerge from the receding distance, with figures trekking through the landscape towards the summit, animating the poetic meaning of the accompanying inscription. The composition inherits the techniques of Song dynasty landscape painting with its rigorous layout, overlapping mountain contours, and alternating slopes and banks in a well-ordered arrangement. The brushwork is refined and delicate, using ink to outline the mountain ranges and overlaying them with shades of green. The chilled, wintery scene is ingeniously awakened by one or two warm-colored houses and towers. The reverse is painted with a snowy scene, "Fishing in a Snowy River", with distant mountains dusted in white snow, towering ancient trees, and draped in a silver-white coat. The water and sky blend together, and the banks and slopes are interwoven. A lone boat with a solitary fisherman onboard casts his fishing line into the freezing waters, creating the illusion of a leisurely and carefree utopia. Although this pair is not signed, it exhibits the literary and artistic temperament of the late Qing Dynasty artist He Xuren. In the later period, this pair was modified into lamps, combining artistic and practical value.
