Wang Yitang, who wrote the calligraphy on both fans, was a Jinshi scholar in the 1904 Imperial examinations, and after 1911 he served first under Yuan Shikai, and later held both provincial and national government posts, until found guilty of treason and executed in 1948. Qu Tuiyuan, who also used the name Qu Duizhi, was a well-known scholar of Chinese history and literature. Pu Ru, born into the Qing imperial family, flourished as a painter who also transmitted the traditional techniques of Chinese painting to a new generation of artists. Finally, the bamboo frame of each fan is carved, one with a landscape, the other with a famous essay.
