Jan Jacob Coenraad Spohler, Dutch 1837-1923- Winter; and Summer; oils on panel, each signed ‘J J C Spohler’ (lower left), each 15.2 x 20 cm., a pair (2). Provenance: with The Cooling Galleries, London.; where purchased in April 1952. Note: A pupil of his father, Jan Jacob Spohler (1811-1866), Spohler was skilled in painting Dutch seasonal landscape scenes, often featuring sailing boats, windmills and fishermen as well ice skaters, ice fishers and snow sledders. He lived and worked in Amsterdam. The present works are imbued with a sense of romantic idealisation, in part enforced by the artist’s use of light brushstrokes which emphasise the calm beauty of the natural world. Spohler returned to these views on a number of occasions. See, for example, Anon. sale, Bonhams, 13 November 2007, lot 18 and Anon. sale, Sworders, Essex, 4 February 2003, lot 100.品相报告: Please refer to department for condition report
