Note A leading protagonist of Post-War German art, Sigmar Polke (1941-2010) is renowned for his influential and experimental work in painting and photography. Untitled dates from 1990, a time in Polke s oeuvre when he began exploring south-east Asia and Australia, and using materials such as meteor dust, smoke, uranium rays, lavender and a purple pigment excreted by snails. These experiments produced paintings which reflect on the concepts of originality and authorship which underpin the Modernist tradition and, in particular, the mystique of Abstract Expressionism.
