The deer ( lu ) is a homophone with the word for emolument, and are often depicted as a mount for Shou Xing, the God of Longevity. Cranes ( he ) symbolise longevity and are often used by Immortals to ascend to heaven. Paintings of deer and crane were popular across the centuries and were often depicted by artists. The famous writer Lu Xun (1886-1936) mentioned a similar painting of a deer in his school, the Sanwei shuwu ('Three-Flavours Studio').pare with a related painting of a deer and pine tree, by Bada Shanren (1626-1707), illustrated in Bada, Shitao: Shuhua xueshu yanjiu taohui lunwen ji , Beijing, 2015, p.67.
