Thomas Heeremans (Dutch 1641-1694) Winter landscape with figures skating on the Oude Schans canal near the Montelbaanstoren, Amsterdam Signed and dated THMANS 1678 (TH in monogram, lower centre) Oil on canvas 88 x 113.8cm; 34¾ x 44¾in Provenance: Probably Christie, Manson & Woods, London, 17 December 1926, lot 112; Richard Green, London; The Power Collection; And by family descent The present work depicts the frozen Oude Schans canal in Amsterdam looking north towards the docks. On the left of the composition stands the Montelbaanstoren, a tower which originally formed part of the city walls and was used by sentries. Although a typical subject for the city`s artists, including Rembrandt and Jacob van Ruisdael, most depictions face away from the docks. By contrast, here we see the numerous masts of the ships and a bridge which could be raised in the middle to allow them to pass in and out of the city. Thomas Heeremans painted a similar view in collaboration with Abraham Stork (1644-1708) (see Christie`s, New York, Old Masters: Part II, 14 April 2016, lot 247).
