A CINNABAR-RED OVERLAY BLUE GLASS 'DRAGON' SNUFF BOTTLE, 1780-1860 China. Of compressed globular form, rising from an oval foot to a slightly waisted neck, the cinnabar-red glass outer layer is well-carved to the turquoise-blue ground with two coiled dragons striding through ocean waves and cloud scrolls, the face, horns, and scales neatly incised.

Provenance: From a German private collection.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and manufacturing flaws, including an open bubble at the mouth.

The combination of cinnabar-red overlay and turquoise-blue glass became fashionable particularly towards the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. The turquoise-blue background is evocative of the summer sky, leading to the typical design of landscape and outdoor scenes. The color combination with the design of a dragon in the present lot is thus rare.
