A 'COBWEB' AMETHYST SNUFF BOTTLEAttributed to the Rustic Crystal Master, 1750-1860 Of squared form with rounded shoulders and a cylindrical neck and with a neatly carved oval footrim, very well-hollowed, the purple stone with natural 'cobweb' inclusions, carved in low relief in one corner with bare trees issuing from rockwork, the reverse left plain; stopper. 2in (5cm) high 1750-1860 紫晶天然網狀紋鼻煙壺一件 Provenance: Mr. and Mrs. David M. Borowitz Collection Christie's, New York, February 1982, The Mr. and Mrs. David M. Borowitz Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles, lot 127 Ralph M. Chait Galleries, New York Joan and Ted Dorf Collection, no. 107 The workshop of the Rustic Crystal Master produced a series of amethyst bottles among its much larger production of crystal bottles. This is one of the finest examples, of a lovely color, with the walls of the bottle kept thick enough to maximize it. Often, and in this case, the carver has rendered a lakeshore towards the bottom right of one side of the bottle suggesting that the purple color of that side is an expanse of water and being uncarved still acts as part of the landscape.
