A CARVED WHITE JADE SNUFF BOTTLE1750-1820 Of teardrop form with shoulders sloping to a cylindrical neck and with a neatly carved oval footrim, of white tone, well-hollowed, one main side carved with a deer with a sprig of lingzhi in its mouth standing beside rockwork and under a pine tree, the reverse with a crane standing on rockwork, one leg raised beside a bamboo grove, the narrow sides carved with mock mask-and-ring handles; stopper. 2 3/4in (7cm) high 1750-1820 白玉刻鶴鹿同春圖鼻煙壺一件 Provenance: Sotheby's, New York, March 22, 1999, lot 171 Joan and Ted Dorf Collection, no. 301 The subject matter of a crane and a deer are symbolic of immortality and longevity with both often being depicted, though not on this bottle, with Shoulao, the deity who also represented these two things. Interestingly this naturalistic design is also found on overlay glass bottles, sometimes with Shoulao present but often with just the crane and deer.
