A TSUDA FAMILY EMBELLISHED WHITE JADE SNUFF BOTTLEBottle: 1750-1800 Embellishment: Tsuda Family, Kyoto, Japan, 1890-1941 Of white tone, of flattened, rectangular form with a cylindrical neck and a neatly carved oval footrim, very well-hollowed, embellished using coral, agate, mother-of-pearl, lacquer and gilding, one main side with two figures in a barrel-shaped boat beneath a scrolling cloud, one standing with a pole in the water while the other leans over the edge to admire the lotus-flowers blooming in the pond, the reverse with leafy blooming peonies growing with grasses from rockwork, a long-tailed bird in the sky above; stopper. 2 1/2in (6.4cm) high 白玉嵌寶石人物花鳥圖鼻煙壺一件 壺: 1750-1800 嵌飾: 1890-1941 日本京東津田家族 Provenance: Acquired in London, June 1993 Joan and Ted Dorf Collection, no. 212 Exhibited: The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, MD., September 30–December 9, 2018 The Tsuda family in Kyoto was headed by Tsuda Sokan (1868-1934) who enlisted the help of his son Tsuda Fukuya in the craft of embellishing older Chinese bottles. The family were also producers of lac burgaute snuff bottles, the majority of which were on metal bases, some with apocryphal Qianlong marks. The embellishment on this eighteenth-century white jade bottle is very appealing and is among the finer works of art produced by the Tsuda family. Although it is not a continuous scene the embellishment has been carefully placed as a decorative element on both narrow sides of the bottle.
