He and his wife would collect art pieces while traveling worldwide seeking gemstones for their business. A sophisticated eye trained on jewels led the owner to develop an equally fine aesthetic taste in art and he soon developed a strong appreciation for Chinese painting. One of the consignor's business associates, whose father was a close friend of Guan Shanyue, and introduced the two. During his first visit to the artist's studio in 1979, the owner received an autographed book of the artist's early paintings. During a visit to the artist's studio in the late 1980s, the present lot was purchased. This painting, of one of Guan Shanyue's signature subjects, was specially selected to wish prosperity for the owner's business and good luck in life. For more than three decades, the painting was prominently displayed in the owner's office.
