14th-15th century A.D. A heater shield shaped harness pendant with integral suspension loop, bearing an heraldic device, fess between six crosses for the Beauchamp family; trace remains of enamelling. See Woodcock and Fowler, Dictionary of British Arms 3, Society of Antiquaries, 2009, p.396, for the arms and Beauchamp family references; cf. The British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme, record id. WILT-D656F5, for a similar example. 10.9 grams, 43 mm (1 3/4 in.). Found near Cotham, Newark, UK, by Ken Burrell whilst searching with a metal detector 1st February 2022. Apanied by a copy of an image of the arms taken from St Giles' church, Northampton. The arms are for the Beauchamp family, earls of Warwick; Richard Beauchamp, the 13th earl (1382-1489 A.D.) is a possible candidate and Richard II was his godfather; among many other posts he was made responsible for the education of the young Henry VI. His life was long and distinguished. [No Reserve]
