13th century A.D. A heater shield shaped horse harness pendant with suspension loop bearing a device of two chevrons, the arms of the Staunton family. See Woodcock, Grant and Graham, Dictionary of British Arms 2, Society of Antiquaries, 1996, pp.511-512. See British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme report number DENO-B19D3D (this pendant). 8.88 grams, 47 mm (1 7/8 in.). Found Staunton in the Vale, Nottinghamshire, UK, by Ken Burrell whilst searching with a metal detector on Thursday 6th April 2017. Apanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme report number DENO-B19D3D. The settlement at Staunton in Nottinghamshire is listed in the Domesday survey of 1086 A.D. and Sir Geoffrey (de) Staunton (1297-1369 A.D.) is buried at St Mary's church, Nottingham with his figural monument there to this day; he was the sheriff of Nottingham in the reign of Edward I.
