1st century B.C.-2nd century A.D. A stylised marble dolphin statue fragment with shallow circular eyes, a sandaled left foot resting on the animal's head, with semi-naturalistic anatomical detailing; mounted on a custom-made stand. See Reinach, S., Repertoire de la statuarie grecque et romaine, Paris, 1930, pp.468-469, for the type of Eros riding a dolphin. 425 grams, 11.2 cm (655 grams total, 12 cm high including stand) (4 3/8 in. (4 3/4 in.)). New York art market, 1992. Property of a London gentleman. The statue may have featured Neptune or Oceanus standing on aquatic supporters. But there is the possibility that it represents the very popular myth of Arion and the dolphin. While Arion was travelling, the sailors who were carrying him upon noticing that he was rich robbed him and gave him the option to choose whether to kill himself or jump into the sea. Arion opted to dive into the sea and before doing so, he played a song dedicated to Apollo with his zither. Dolphins, attracted by Arion's song, surrounded the . When Arion jumped into the sea, one of them loaded him on his back and carried him safely to dry land of Corinth. Arion forgot to push back the dolphin to the sea and the poor animal died. Periander, Tyrant of Corinth and friend of Arion, erected a monument to the dolphin and crucified the evil sailors in front of it. A third further possibility is that the sculpture came from a statue of Eros riding the dolphin.
