Marianne Grant - Abstract Composition, mid-20th century oil on board, signed recto, artist's label verso, 49.5cm x 89cm, within a painted wood frame. Note: born in Prague in 1921, the artist was a survivor of the Holocaust, experiencing the occupation of Czechoslovakia, forced labour and imprisonment in Auschwitz and Belsen-Belsen concentration camps. While in Auschwitz, Marianne Grant was made to paint pictures and make detailed family trees for Dr Josef Mengele. She moved to Glasgow in 1951 and lived there for the rest of her life. In 2002, some of her artwork was displayed at the Kelvingrove Gallery in the city. The following year, an education pack about her life was sent to every child in Scotland. She died in 2007, aged 86.
