提要：马宗霍（1897-1976），湖南衡阳县人。湖南南路师范学堂毕业。历任暨南大学、金陵女子大学、上海中国公学、中央大学等校教授，湖南国立师范学院国文系教授、系主任，湖南大学文学院院长、湖南师范学院（今湖南师范大学）中文系教授、中央文史馆馆员、中华书局编审。主持廿四史点校工作。毕生以研究文字学为其主攻方向，潜心《说文解字》二十余年。除《说文解字》方面的著述外，尚有《音韵学通论》《文字学发凡》《中国经学史》等。
