林妹姝，名冠明，1911年出生于广东省中山市。1932年毕业于广东省立女子师范 艺术科，师从岭南著名国画家黄君璧学习国画。在女师毕业考试期间，举办个人第一次国画作品展览。随后曾在广州、香港、澳门、上海、南 京、苏州、杭州、台湾等地举办个人国画展30余次。1938年为避国难，在香港创办同德、华南书苑、林妹姝画院，1943年在上海创办“上海女子艺术学院”均自任院长。1956年由文化部推荐，调入北京中国画院参加筹建工作，画院成立后，在山水组任画士。1957年在北京中山公园水 榭展厅举办个人国画展。曾为中国美术家协会会员、中国画研究会会员。
