The body is covered with a smooth, rich layer of Guan-type glaze. Sparse, natural crackles cover the glazed surface. The round foot ring is colored in iron brown, imitating an iron foot ring; a trait one can trace back to the antiquity of Song. Few octagonal cups still exist today, as most antique cups are round shaped, due to their difficulty in firing. Emperor Qianlong was particularly fond of artifacts from past dynasties and expressed great appreciation for the crackle-glazed porcelain wares of Song Dynasty. In addition to collecting the originals, Qianlong also ordered the production of imitations.
