Four carved wood spoons, Zulu, Southern Africa, 19th to early 20th century, each worked with a plain rounded bowl, the handles variously carved with shaped knops, 28.5cm - 34cm long, together with a Zulu beadwork collar or headband, possibly bridal, worked with strands of blue beads between white bead clusters and one pink cluster, approx 44cm long. (5) Spoons of this type were used as cooking utensils and typically stored in the ceiling of a dwelling hut. Comparative examples can be found in the British museum including number Af1979,01.5147, from the early 20th century. Spoons: One spoon has a split to the bowl. One spoon with large chips to tip of bowl. One spoon with small chip to tip of bowl. All with signs of age and use. Beadwork collar: appears intact with minor signs of age.
