砚呈风字形，故名。以歙石为之，质地细腻坚硬，纹路自然。砚首侧沿端刻楷书“宋天成风字砚”此砚造型独特，御题文辞畅晓通达，石材精良，堪称宫廷文房上品。乾隆四十一年（1776）以后，清廷曾分别以端石、歙石、澄泥大量仿制古砚，用来赏赐宗室大臣，每套六件。有仿汉未央砖海天初月砚、仿汉石渠阁瓦砚、仿唐八棱砚、仿宋徳寿殿犀纹砚、仿宋天成风字砚、仿宋玉兔朝元砚。此砚应为其中一块。
