A FINE FAN PAINTING WITH LANDSCAPE BY HU JIE (ACTIVE 1694-1710) China, 17th/18th ct. 19,5 x 57,4 cm The fan painting with landscape, mountains and small village at the lake shore, and inscription by Hu Jie in the style of Wang Meng (active ca. 1309-1395, one of the Four great Masters of the Yuan dynasty), ink and light colours on paper, signed “Hu Jie” and 2 seals “Jie yin” and “Zhuzhun”; the inscription means roughly: “Painted by Hu Jie, (called) Jingnong, for judgement by the Daoist elder Wen yunien in emulating (the style of) Huanghe Shanqiao (= Wang Meng)” Hu Jie, zi “Zhuzhun”, hao “Jingnong”, active c. 1694-1710”, was born at Loudang, the today Taicang, province Jiangsu. The Chinese literature mentions Hu Jie always as one of the main pupils of Wang Hui (1632-1717), but he seemed to have painted only occasionally.
