IN THE STYLE OF WANG HUI (1632-1717) China, 18th ct. 25,2 x 240 cm Lonely Temple Amidst Streams and Mountains, ink and light colors on silk mounted as handscroll. Inscription and signature by the artist at the end of the scroll: “After the painting ‘Lonely Temple amidst Streams and Mountains’ by Yan Wengui (967-1044) …, on a lucky day in the qinghe (forth) month in the summer of the gengchen year (1700) of the Kangxi period painted and inscribed by Gengyan sanren Wang Hui.” Two seals of the artist: "Seal of Wang Hui" (Wang Hui yin), “Shigu”. One collector’s seal at the beginning of the scroll: "Bi Long jiancang" (Appreciated and collected by Bi Long). On the back of the fastening pin of white jade there are engraved four characters: “Appreciated by the Qianlong Emperor” (Qianlong yu shang). From an old southern German private collection, acquired between 1970 and 2002 Wang Hui, style name Shigu, was the pupil of Wang Jian (1598-1677) and Wang Shimin (1592-1680) and was extraordinarily talented. He was considered the best landscape painter of his time and was commissioned by the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722) to lead the painting project of his inspection tour to the South of China. In his paintings he used the brush technique of the Yuan masters to copy the old masterpieces of the Song dynasty in a most brilliant way.
