Ɏ AN EARLY IVORY NETSUKE OF A SAGE AND BOYJapan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)The rather large netsuke finely carved in openwork as a smiling sage with long, neatly incised hair and beard, wearing long flowing robes, a young boy seated on a drum below him, both holding gnarled branches bearing blossoms inlaid with coral and mother-of-pearl, two asymmetrical himotoshi to the sage’s back.HEIGHT 6 cmCondition: Very good condition, appealingly worn, expected age cracks, traces of use. Fine, smooth, honey-yellow patina.Provenance: The Gabor Wilhelm Collection, Paris.Trade Certificate: In accordance with new EU regulations that went into effect in January 2022, we have applied for a certificate to sell this item within the EU.
