AKASOFU GYOKKO: A FINE AND LARGE BRONZE MODEL OF AN OX AND OXHERDBy Akasofu Gyokko, signed GyokkoJapan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)Modelled as an oxherd, kneeling on the ground, his face with a joyful expression as he grasps the left forefoot of the ox to fit a straw sandal (ushi-waraji) on its hoof. The eyes of the ox in shakudo, carrying realistically-textured bundles of sticks, wrapped by wires to appear as a secured rope. The base signed GYOKKO in a rectangular reserve.LENGTH 30.5 cmWEIGHT 6,958 gCondition: Very good condition with minor surface wear.Provenance: British private collection.Akasofu Gyokko (dates unknown) lived in Tokyo, his factory producing cast metalwork for export. His given name was Sotojiro and he is recorded as a member of the Tokyo Chukinkai (Tokyo Cast Metalworkers' Association) in the second half of the Meiji era.
