A LARGE BRONZE OKIMONO OF FIVE TURTLESJapan, c. 1860, late Edo (1615-1868) to early Meiji period (1868-1912)Naturalistically cast, depicting four young turtles clambering over the carapace of an adult turtle, trying to reach the highest spot, and extending their necks towards the sun. The different textures are achieved with remarkable skill. The surface bearing a fine, unctuous patina.HEIGHT 14.5 cm, WIDTH 23 cm WEIGHT 5.3 kgCondition: Good condition with some wear and small nicks here and there, a chip to a small turtle’s tail and foot. One turtle has been re-attached and is slightly loose but stable.
