甪端熏炉，形体方正，体态健硕饱满而不显臃肿，气宇不凡，局部鎏金装饰，见皇家气象。
瑞兽昂首傲立，双目圆瞪，独角粗韧上翘，颈部、后脑毛发雕刻精细，首为炉顶，腹部中空，可作放置熏香燃料，张口露齿，以便香味飘散。身披火云甲，短尾自然下沓，脚踩盘蛇，大有风驰电掣之感。
甪端是识贤聪慧的神兽，以甪端护卫在侧，显示皇帝为有道明君，身在宝座而晓天下事，做到八方归顺，四海来朝。故甪端崇拜在明清两代均为皇家所重视，内府专置有司负责制造事宜，以供内廷之用，北京故宫太和殿内宝座前摆放了一对掐丝珐大型甪端。
