Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Ca. 100-300 AD A carved grey schist relief depicting Buddha seated upon a plinth in dharmachakra mudra, signifying the delivery of the first sermon and setting in motion of the wheel of Dharma. He wears a long, elaborate robe which covers his legs; his eyes are prominent, nose aquiline, mouth projecting a gentle smile, his head adorning an elaborate coiffure featuring a topknot (ushnisha). He is surrounded by two disciples wearing turbans and long earrings. This panel was probably once part of a large-scale narrative modelled in high relief: the flat surface on the reverse indicates that this fragment was once attached to a surface behind, which was placed on a building as decoration. Size: L:With stand: 190mm / W:300mm ; 3.7kg Provenance: From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly acquired in early 2000s in France; previously in 1970s European collection.
