菩萨面相端正，神态安祥，双颊饱满，眉间白毫，杏目含苞，略带笑意。头戴华丽的宝冠，耳饰花坠，耳际宝缯飞扬。上身双肩搭帔帛，胸前饰有精美的联珠璎珞长链，下身着长裙，腰带束带，衣纹流畅，韵律自然，颇具柔美之感。左腿支起，右腿自然平置身前，悠悠闲坐。
自在观音，是观世音菩萨三十三种化身之一。在诸多大乘经典，如《楞严经》、《法华经》、《华严经》中，都有关于其的记述，可见信仰之广泛。在早期印度及唐、五代及宋金元时期，描绘自在观音的题材雕塑，屡见不鲜。
本尊自在观音像端庄秀美，面目慈悲，造型比例精确，生动展现出观音菩萨普度众生的慈悲之心与庄严祥和之相，为明代珍贵佛教造像佳品。
