The screen is made of five panels in three sizes, each panel with a frame which is fixed on a jade stand. At the top and the bottom of the panels there are white jade openwork ornaments set in three rows. The five panels are smoothly carved and depict garden scenes with several women. The women are strolling at leisure through the garden, playing the Chinese zither (guqin) and six-piece chess (liubo), two women are lingering at a pond. The women are depicted as females of the Tang period, with hairdos and dresses in Tang style. There are willow trees and banana plants growing in the garden and ducks are swimming in a pond. The private garden is enclosed by walls. A few buildings are located nearby. On the reverse side of the table screen, there is a carving of a large landscape garden done in low relief. The scene resembles a Chinese landscape painting, showing mountains, water, houses, pavilions, terraces, bridges, trees, boats and human figures. Chinese literati started to have private pleasure gardens in the mid-Tang period.
