He was born in a hindu khatri family to Vaisakhi mal, a tradesman of the village Kunjah near Gujrat. Born in 1750 died on 29th October 1814. He was one of the architects of the sikh empire. Who rose by dint of merit to the post of Diwan and virtuallymander in chief of the Sikh forces. Ranjit singh had a great regard for him.
