Novo-Hispanic School; 17th century. "Virgin and Child". Oil on canvas. Preserves its original canvas. It presents damages in the exterior areas. Measurements: 125,5 x 95 cm. In apletely baroque scene, some curtains placed in the upper area of the image give way to the devotional image of the Virgin with the Child. In this case, the presence of the mother of Jes is presented as a throne that hoes the delicate figure of a small crowned boy, who holds the orb in one of his hands. The scene is notable for its great symmetry and hieratism, where ornamentation is a fundamental element of the pictorial conception. For this reason, the grandeur of the Virgin's costume, together with her volumetric and ornate hair, occupy almost the entire scene. These features give great prominence to the figure of the Virgin, who to a certain extent is superimposed on the image of her son, with whom she does not share any facial features. The two figures share a rosary. The iconography of the Virgin of the Rosary is directly related to the figure of Saint Dominic. Tradition, which began in the 15th century, tells that the mother of God herself taught the saint to pray the rosary in 1208, telling him to propagate this devotion and to e it as a powerful weapon against the enemies of the faith. Appearing in the chapel where the saint was praying, holding a rosary in his hand, he taught him to recite it, promising that many sinners would be converted and obtain abundant graces. St. Dominic went out of there full of zeal, with the rosary in his hand. He did indeed preach it, and with great success, bringing many Albigensians back to the Catholic faith. It is worth mentioning that during Spanish colonial rule, a mainly religio painting was developed, aimed at Christianising the indigeno peoples. Local painters were modelled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of type and iconography. The most frequent models were harquebier angels and triangular virgins; however, in the early years of the 19th century, at the time of independence and political openness in some of the colonies, several artists began to depict a new model of painting with its own identity.Dimensions: 125.5 x 95 cm.
