长脚大象最初出现在达利1946年的油画作品《圣安东尼的迷惑》中，三只长脚大象走在沙漠里，第一只身上背着女人，象征性欲；第二只背着尖顶方碑，象征权势；第三只背着豪宅，象征财富。依照达利的说法：圣安东尼并没有免疫，还是受了世俗的迷惑。
达利刻意拉长了大象的脚，让它看起来随时会摔倒，这意味着，男人只要是碰这三样东西，就像大象长脚一样，随时会发生问题。
而正常的大象和天鹅也是他很爱用的意象，组成了他最著名的 「双重影像」。
