Günther, Ignaz (Umkreis/circle) Altmannstein 1725 - 1775 München H. 50/173 cm An extraordinary giltwood Rococo crucifix. The Rocaille tooled moulded base with a globe, richly decorated cross bar. Presumably limewood, the original white polychromy later painted over with varnish, poliment gilding, original mirror glasses. The body of Christ carved in full round, with original white polychromy and glass eyes. Elaborate "flying" carved loincloth. Crown of thorns made of wire mesh. Partly missing fingers. Very good elaboration, the polychromy only partially retouched, minor age damage. Mirror glass partially cracked. South German private collection, assembled between 1955 and 1980 For the type of the crucified Christ, compare the sculpture by Ignaz Günther from the Bavarian National Museum, as well as the life-size Body of Christ that Günther donated in 1764 to the parish church of the Holy Cross in Altmannstein, where he was born. Lit. Peter Volk, Ignaz Günter, Vollendung des Rokoko, 1991, p. 146; Bayrisches Nationalmuseum, Objektdatenbank, Inv. Nr. 83/157.
