Russian or Greek icon, 17th century. "Orthodox monastery of the Virgin Mary of Balikli". Oil on panel. Carved, painted and gilded wood. With label on the back of the Hagia Sophia Museum, Istanbul, Turkey. Measurements: 32 x 26,5 x 3 cm. The icon with figures at the therapeutic spring in the Balikli Monastery, placed inside an Ottoman frame of painted and gilded wood. This icon depicts the therapeutic spring of the Balikli Monastery, or the Monastery of the "Mother of God in the Spring" in Istanbul, the Mother of God and the Christ child are depicted on top of a golden fountain from which the sick and the faithful drink. The church now standing on the site was rebuilt and restored in 1835, but has the same dedication as the shrine erected on the same site between the late 5th and early 6th century (destroyed in the first half of the 15th century). The complex is named after a sacred spring, reputed to have healing properties, which is an important Eastern Orthodox center and a popular pilgrimage site. The spring's holy water flows into a marble basin in which fish swim, as seen in this icon. These fish give rise to the Turkish name of the Balikli complex which means "the place where there are fish". Many icons depicting this sacred site have been painted, always with Mary holding the Christ child and sitting in the chalice-shaped bowl of a fountain from which waters flow into a well below. Often, as in our icon, there are two angels above, as well as various characters at the font. Dimensions 32 x 26,5 x 3 cm.
