Andalusian School, XVII century. "Child with attributes of the Passion". Oil on canvas. Restored. Frame of the early nineteenth century. Measurements: 58 x 42 cm; 78 x 52 cm (frame). In this representation of a sleeping child welcoming between his plump arms instruments of the Passion of Christ or Arma Christi, the formal and stylistic proximity with the Granada painter Juan de Sevilla is appreciated. A shrewd combination of Murillo, Flemish and Venetian models is observed in the characterization of the scene, in which the costumbrista treatment of the child of puffy cheeks arranged in an idealized landscape, of Flemish filiation. The small body is monumentalized by being placed in the foreground. Skillfully chiseled with chiaroscuro, it is endowed with an almost sculptural presence, with its fleshly bare foot breaking the two-dimensionality of the painting. Behind him, the forest glade escapes towards a misty horizon, rich in glaucous hues. Dimensions 58 x 42 cm; 78 x 52 cm (frame).
