释文：“余观民之暇日兮，原遍历以旁游；命舟师以进涉兮，遂扬舲于中洲。绝芳芷以经渡兮，暂偃息于兹楼；骋四望以极目兮，谐心旷而神周。南引越水，北控吴丘；天目西峙，渤海东流。倚嘉城之特障，兀巨浸以中浮。若乃潇洒长汀，蘼芜远浒。”

楷书诗文出自明代画家沈奎《烟雨楼赋》，明代赵瀛重建烟雨楼后二十年，烟雨楼又经历了一次重修，主持这次重修工程的，是当时的嘉湖兵备道沈奎。
沈奎，字文叔，江苏江阴人。嘉靖三十八年（1559）进士，隆庆时任浙江提刑按察司佥事、嘉湖兵备道。所谓兵备道是明朝时于各省重要地方设置的整饬兵备的道员，置于各省重要地区，当时沈奎就驻于嘉兴。沈奎虽任武职，但于诗文也颇有造诣，着有《归兴集》，他曾在江阴发起成立“大雅堂”诗社，是当时应天（南京）、吴中较为有名的文化社团。
