SHUGYOKU: A WOOD NETSUKE OF A MONKEY AND YOUNG By Shugyoku, signed Shugyoku 秀玉 Japan, Edo (Tokyo), c. 1830, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved as a seated monkey mother grooming her offspring lying at her feet in typically maternal fashion, their fur neatly incised and features well detailed. Good, large himotoshi to the back and underside. Signed to the underside SHUGYOKU within an oval reserve. The style strongly suggests the school of Jugyoku. HEIGHT 3.1 cm Condition: Overall good condition with minor wear, few small nicks, one foot repaired. Fine, dark patina. Provenance: Old French collection Jules Cherki.
