A FINE EDO SCHOOL WOOD NETSUKE OF A MASK CARVER WITH USOBUKI MASK Unsigned Japan, Edo (Tokyo), first half of 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The mask carver seated, holding a chisel in one hand and an Usobuki mask in the other. The folds of his elaborately flowing robe are carved very well. Amusingly, he is imitating the distorted facial features of the mask - perhaps he is gaining inspiration from the act. The wood of a very appealing color. Large himotoshi through the back. HEIGHT 3.8 cm Condition: Very good condition, minor surface wear. Provenance: German private collection.
