A GREEN-GLAZED FLASK Liao Dynasty Of saddle-form, surmounted by a cylindrical, lipped neck and two panels with apertures, applied with three small figures, the body with incised scrolling motifs, covered overall in a deep green glaze. 33.3cm (13 1/8in) high 注脚 Flasks of this shape were traditionally known as 'Pilgrim flasks'; their shape derived from leather prototypes, of which they have retained many features, such as the seam and hanging lug. A similar flask, but with two figures instead of three, in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is illustrated in Hai-wai Yi-chen Chinese Art in Overseas Collections Pottery and Porcelain (II), p. 88, no. 86; another flask, with two figures on the rim but slightly different decoration on the body, from the Chang Foundation, Taipei, is illustrated in Selected Chinese Ceramics from Han to Qing Dynasties, p. 78, col. pl. 20.
