He was closely connected to the Abstract Expressionist movement which was burgeoning in America at the time, with his travels to New York in the 1960s leading to his association with figures such as Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko. Hoyland’s first solo exhibition was held at the Marlborough Gallery in London in 1964, and he has been the subject of retrospectives at the Serpentine Gallery, the Royal Academy, and Tate St Ives. Hoyland’s works are in major collections in the UK, including the Courtauld, the Tate, and the V&A. They are also in a number of collections in the USA, such as MoMA in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art, alongside museums across Europe and Australia.
