Ross MacFadden, Toronto Note: A similar but smaller version of this scene sold at Christie's, London, United Kingdom on May 23, 2002 (lot 151), however this particular work offers a much more pronounced foreground vegetation and an expansive view of the background landscape on both sides. A vertical composition, measuring 30 x 25 inches, was signed “T F Wainewright” and dated 1868. Wainwright first exhibited in London in 1831 and continued over his long career to submit a total of over 250 works to the Royal Academy and other London institutions until his death at the age of 99. An old, typed biography verso, spelling the artist’s name “Wainewright,” states, “He is noted for his cattle pictures, painted on the Thames and its backwaters, and his colouring stands out, being so restful. His pictures are pleasing to the eye and have always been popular.” Estimate: $1,500—2,500
