A set of eight Chinese inkstones dating from the early 19th century. The inkstones come in a fitted box with a 5-character inscription on the exterior. The lot also comes with provenance documentation. Each inkstone features carved and painted decoration, and each has a 3-character inscription on one face. The inkstones are all different shapes, but most feature paintings of dragons on one face and a landscape scene on the other. One inkstone has paintings of scholar's objects. Seven of the inkstones have a 4-character inscription carved on the side. Dimensions are: the smallest inkstone measures 2 1/4 inches tall X 2 1/2 inches wide, 5.7 cm X 6.4 cm; the largest inkstone measures 4 1/4 inches tall X 1 1/4 inches wide, 10.8 cm X 3.2 cm; and the box measures 12 5/8 inches tall X 8 inches wide, 32.1 cm X 20.3 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: The inkstones are in overall good condition with paint wear throughout. Provenance: From a private Texas collection. The lot comes with provenance documentation from the 8th Biennial International Event of Antiquities in the Grand Palace in Paris which took place September 23 to October 10, 1976.
