A very large Chinese blanc de chine porcelain statue of Guanyin dating from the 18th century. She stands on a cloud pedestal holding a scroll in her left hand. A ruyi crown adorns her head, and an elaborate ruyi necklace hangs from her neck. There is a 4-character mark on her back. The lot comes with a book, "Chinese and Other Far Eastern Art," published by Apollo (Poughkeepsie, New York, 1988) compiling several catalogs of Chinese art from the early 1940s. Dimensions are: 34 inches tall X 11 inches wide X 11 inches deep, 86.4 cm X 27.9 cm X 27.9 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: There are cracks and repairs to Guanyin's hair as well as significant cracking and firing cracks to the interior of the statue. Her left hand is loose. There is a hairline to the back of the robe. Minor chipping is present to the robe, scroll, and to her right hand. Provenance: The lot comes with a document from Hindman Auctions verifying the provenance of the piece for their auction on October 15, 2019. Previously, the piece belonged to the collection of Marion and Henry Bloch in Kansas City, Missouri. The piece was previously published as item 1124 of Book II within the publication "Chinese and Other Far Eastern Art," (Poughkeepsie, NY: Apollo, 1988). Book II contains the original Yamanaka and Company, Inc.'s 1943 catalogue, "Collection of Chinese and Other Far Eastern Art." Similar examples can be found in the British Museum under accession number 1980,0728.695 as well as in International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, Italy. A similar large Guanyin holding a basket was previously sold at Sotheby's New York on September 16, 2009, as lot 226.
