A George III brass lantern clock, Robert Austen, Challock, circa 1775, the countwheel striking movement incorporating Huygens's endless winding and anchor escapement regulated by seconds pendulum swinging behind the frame at the rear, the dial engraved with symmetrical foliate scrolls beneath signature Robert Austen, Challock and with pierced iron hand to centre within applied Roman numeral chapter ring with diamond lozenge half hour markers and engraved leafy infill to angles, the third period frame with column-turned corner posts beneath foliate scroll engraved and pierced front fret, vase turned finials and domed iron bell bearer, the sides with hinged brass doors beneath further frets, the rear with iron back panel, 32cm (12.5ins) high; atop a later oak wall bracket, incorporating moulded platform and twin shaped supports applied to an onion-topped back panel with decorative shaped apron to base, 70cm high, (2) Provenance: The property of a private collector, Hertfordshire. Robert Austen is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in Challock, Kent, circa 1780.
