George Washington Partial Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.5" x 8.75", [Mount Vernon]; [September 11, 1797]. Addressed to Tobias Lear, Washington's personal secretary. This is the final page of what appears to be a bifolium. It has been ripped near the integral fold and the first two pages of the letter are now missing. It reads in full: "...by the Person before alluded to; that you may gather, from thence, the outlines of my views, & intention; but more particularly, that you might not be under a mistake with regard to the Fisheries (which have always been considered as distinct objects, although they might be united in the same lease)—the slipes [sic] of old field without the present fences—and the Woodland; not an acre of which will be suffered to be cleared for the purpose of cultivation—nor a stick carried off the premises for any purpose whatsoever; nor used thereon except in the manner, and for the purposes which are mentioned in one or more of the enclosed Papers. After perusing the manuscript ones, I beg they may be returned by the Post, as I have no copy of either. With great esteem & regard I am—Dear Sir Your Affectionate Ser. Go: Washington" The letterpress copy of this letter has survived, so the full transcript is available to us. From it we are able to ascertain that the letter concerns the management of his land, specifically the River Farm, for the next two seasons. Reference: National Archives Founders Online Condition: Signature is light. Uneven left edge. Gently soiled and stained. Light edgewear with closed tears along old folds, the largest of which measures .75". One area of chipping along left margin with two closed tears which measure .25" and .75" respectively.
