[Mingo Chief Kiashuta's Speech Declaring Neutrality During the Revolutionary War]. The Pennsylvania Gazette, August 7, 1776. Four pages, 10.25" x 17.25", Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; August 7, 1776. The Pennsylvania Gazette Numb. 2485 featuring an article recounting the speech made by Mingo chief Kiashuta at Fort Pitt regarding the intention of the Six Nations to remain neutral in the Revolutionary War. It reads in part: "Three months ago I left this place to attend a treaty at Niagara, to be held between the commanding officers at that place, and the Six Nations, Shawanese, Delawares, &c....while I was at Cagnawagoe, eight hundred Indians, of the Six Nations, hearing of my intention of going to the treaty, came to meet and go with me...They were determined to take no part in the present war between Great Britain and America, and desiring them to do the same...He then addressed himself to the Virginians and Pennsylvanians in the following manner: "Brothers, we will not suffer neither the English or Americans to march an army through our country. Should either attempt tit, we shall forewarn them three times from proceeding; but should they then persist, they must abide by the consequence..." Condition: Light edgewear with some minor soiling.
