MENTIS’, enclosing a saltire enamelled central shield with lion rampant within and crown surmount, with foliate and shell suspension (Dimensions: Length: 5.8cm, weight 35g) (Length: 5.8cm, weight 35g) Footnote: Note: Instituted by King James I in 1624 to raise money independently of Parliament the Baronets of Nova Scotia were sold to Scottish landowners. In 1625 Charles I conferred on the holders of this land the title and dignity of Baronets of Nova Scotia and the use of the title Sir. These titles were used until the Act of Union in 1707 when the separate Scottish and English titles came into line and became baronetcies of Great Britain. Some 18th, 19th and 20th century copies of these original badges are recorded presumably made by families whose forbearers had held the title and wished to commemorate this. It is likely that this piece was acquired to commemorate the family's historical connections to the Baronetage of Nova Scotia such as 5th Baronet Sir John Campbell, 1st Earl of Breadalbane & Holland.
