以檀木雕刻造像的传统源自印度。文字记载中最早的一尊檀木佛像应为《佛说旃檀树经》、《正法念处经》述及的一尊由优填王所命造高达五尺的佛像。此尊阿弥陀佛呈低眉静思状，庄重慈祥。佛身披法衣，结全跏趺坐，双手执禅定印于脐前，躯体浑厚，造型敦实，衣纹线条流畅，采用内地传统的写实手法。整像以紫檀木胎雕制，漆金于外，包浆古朴自然。
